About This Site

April 15, 2010

Have you ever seen one of those infomercials on TV and thought, “Boy!  What a great product!”  You hustle to the phone or your computer, plop down your $39.95, and wait expectantly for the UPS man to deliver your package.

But what happens if the product doesn’t perform the way it was supposed to?  Wouldn’t it be nice if you could find that out before you bought it?  Well, here’s your chance.

I’ve personally tried some of these products in my own home, and you’ll get my honest opinion here.  I don’t accept advertising on this site from the same people who make the infomercials or manufacture the products, so I have no bias toward being positive about their products.

I’m starting this with just the few products that I have personally tried, but I will try to add new content often.  This site will provide the most help to the most people if you, the readers, add your comments about products you’ve tried.  That way, we can hear from several points of view.  Maybe something that worked really well under the circumstances I tried worked really terribly for you in a different scenario.

I hope you find this site helpful.  If you want to contact me directly about any of the products you see here, drop me a line at bphilley AT probizassoc DOT com.

Bucky Balls

May 11, 2010

Overall Rating:  4.5 out of 5 stars

The Premise: 216 rare powerful rare earth magnets.  Unlimited fun.  The amazing magnetic toy you can’t put down!  Unlimited shapes, patterns, stress relief and more.

Buckyballs are the amazing magnetic Toy people are talking about everywhere. These are perfect to keep on any work desk, Great for stress relief or to stimulate new ideas while you play. Buckyballs are ideal for coffee tables too, your guests will be talking about these for weeks.

BuckyBalls have been featured in RollingStone, Maxim, Esquire and People Magazine… Rolling Stone called them “Toy of the Year” while Esquire said “there is no better desktoy.”

My experience: What a delight!  My kids are actually lining up to earn the privilege of  playing with this toy.  The magnetic balls can be formed into any number of shapes, and it is truly addictive.

My middle son, who is very close to autistic, loves anything that requires his hands to work.  He simply won’t put these balls down.  He makes tunnels, rings for his “girlfriend” and numerous other shapes.  He could use a set with double the amount of balls.

I was a little concerned about finding these all over my house for the dogs to swallow, but they are so highly magnetic, they don’t often fall.  If they do fall off the table, it is several of the balls stuck together, so you can find them easily.  The set also comes with a storage case, which you may find you don’t need because they never get stored – they are always in use!

I was going to take the set into work and leave it out on my desk, but I’m not sure my department could handle the loss in productivity.  We’re going through a downsizing, so it’s not exactly the right time for us to be playing with toys, but I have no doubt that everyone who came into my office would pick this up and start playing with it.

One warning:  this toy contains numerous very small pieces and is not appropriate for young children.  If swallowed, the magnets can actually stick the intestinal coils together resulting in major digestive problems.

MSRP: $29.95 + $5.95 S&H.  Current offer:  buy a second set and the shipping is free.

Customer Service: Not rated.  My set was a gift, but it did arrive in a timely manner (less than 1 week) from the date it was ordered.

Price:  2.5 stars

This was the only complaint I had with the product.  $30 seems like a lot of money for a toy, regardless of how much fun it is to play with

Quality: 4.5 stars

My set has gotten wet, been left outside overnight, placed in the refrigerator for a weekend (don’t ask!) and carried around in pockets for several days.  It is still in pristine condition.

Value:  4 stars

Although the price is high, the quality is excellent, and this toy would get a great deal of use in most any situation.  Because it is made out of metal, that would tend to drive the price tag higher than plastic toys.

Usefulness: 5 stars

A great way to entertain people, particularly during stressful periods.  I do think I’ll have these available on my desk at work during the next round of performance reviews.  I think it helps to have a stress reliever around when difficult topics are being discussed.  I also teach some classes, and like to provide toys for people to entertain themselves with during lectures.  This will make a good addition to my bag of tricks!

Compared to other brands: 5 stars

I have yet to find another toy with such broad appeal to a wide variety of age ranges and abilities.
